THE FIREPLACE AND PANELLING IN THE RIGHT OF THE MAIN BAR WAS SALVAGED FROM THE CASTLE PRISON GATEHOUSE IN 1935, THE PRISON WAS ORIGINALLY CONSTRUCTED c1830 DEMOLISHED 1935.THE MASONS ARMS IS A GRADE 11 LISTED BUILDING FOR IT’S SPECIAL ARCHITECTURAL AND HISTORIC INTEREST AND KEEPS THE SECRETS OF DID DICK TURPIN ACTUALLY LEAN AND WARM HIMSELF?
The infamous cells of York Castle Museum, are unlocked, unleashing the powerful, moving and sometimes gruesome tales of those that were once imprisoned there. York Castle Prison, plunges visitors back to the time when the building was used to house the county’s worst felons and debtors. By winding through the cramped authentic cells people can explore the dark, dank conditions prisoners were kept in and learn about their crimes and their punishment.
York Castle Museum is in the centre of York, close to Clifford’s Tower and only 0.1mile or 3min walk to the MASONS ARMS. Walk east onto Tower Street, right onto Fishergate, then sharp right and the Masons Arms is on the left.
